Description
The lychgate and flank walls at West Dean Cemetery were erected around 1931 in memory of Evelyn James, who passed away on May 13, 1929. The structure was designed by architect Walter H Godfrey.
The lychgate features a braced oak frame beneath a half-hipped roof covered in plain tiles. It is set on a shallow stone plinth, which was installed between 2011 and 2012, and includes a flagged stone threshold. The frame bears an inscription that reads:
MILLICENT ALEXANDRA SILVIA AUDREY AND EDWARD CHILDREN OF / EVELYN JAMES HAVE BUILT THIS RESTING PLACE IN HER MEMORY.
The lychgate has a pair of oak gates with diagonally set slats and iron fixtures and fittings.
On each side of the lychgate are stone splay walls that incorporate integral stone seats. On the western face of the northern splay wall, there is a carved commemorative stone panel with the inscription:
MILLICENT. ALEXANDRA. SILVIA / AUDREY & EDWARD. CHILDREN OF / EVELYN JAMES. HAVE BUILT THIS / RESTING PLACE IN HER MEMORY.
This panel is flanked at both ends by a bas-relief of inward-facing, winged figures in draped clothing, each with one hand raised. The identity of the artist is unknown.
