Description
The gates at the eastern entrance to Thornbridge Hall date from the 18th century and late 19th century, constructed from gritstone and cast iron. They feature two tall square stone piers in the center, approximately 12 feet high, flanked by two smaller piers on either side, about 8 feet high. The central piers have raised and fielded panels on the east and west sides, with banded rustication and moulded cornices. Each is topped with decorated 19th-century urn finials that have four projecting griffin heads. The side piers also display banded rustication and are topped with similar urn finials. The central pair of gates features intricate scroll decorations, with a scrolled top in the 18th-century style, while the side gates are designed in a similar but less elaborate manner. Attached walls on both sides to the west have moulded copings and are finished with large 19th-century urns, which are fluted at the base and adorned with foliage swags and dog-heads. The gates were originally powered by water.
