Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the attached presbytery were built in 1882, funded by the Duke of Norfolk. The church is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings, topped with stone slate roofs featuring stone coped gables and moulded kneelers. It has a chamfered plinth and various stone stacks, and presents an irregular plan and elevations with one and two storeys.
To the south, there is a single storey chapel that has 2- and 3-light chamfered mullioned and transomed windows, along with a bellcote featuring a conical cap on the south gable. The east porch is located on the front, with a tall polygonal chimney stack to the right. The presbytery is situated at the north end, facing west, and consists of three bays, with the right bay being gabled and taller.
A central doorway is accessed by a flight of six stone steps, featuring an oak studded door with a segmental arched over-light above. Above the door, there is a 2-light window, flanked by two-storey canted bays that contain 4-light mullion windows, with the ground floor windows also having transoms. The right-hand gabled bay includes an additional 2-light chamfered mullion window above. Moulded bands are present on the first and second floors.
