Description

Rutland Chambers is a building that was originally a house and is now used as an office. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and is constructed from roughly-coursed limestone with ashlar sandstone dressings. The roof is made of stone slates, although the rear has been covered with concrete tiles from the 20th century.

The building has two storeys and features a three-window range, with a short wing at the rear. The original house occupies the two bays on the right side and is characterized by large quoins and a near-central doorway that has a canopy supported by shaped wooden brackets. To the left of the door, there are square-faced mullioned windows with three lights, while the other windows have two lights. The wooden casements are fitted with leaded lights. There are signs of heightening or rebuilding at the eaves level. The first bay is a later 18th-century addition, featuring a part-glazed door with a similar canopy and an enlarged two-light mullioned window with a cemented surround; there is a two-light window above it, consistent with the rest of the building. An ashlar sandstone stack is located at the right end, and a reconstituted stone ridge stack is positioned to the left of the second bay. At the rear, the wing includes a two-light double-chamfered mullioned window. The interior has not been inspected.
