Description
Shepherd's Cottage is a former belvedere that was later converted into a house, dating from the late 17th century. The building is constructed of rendered, coursed, squared sandstone rubble, with sandstone dressings. It features a collapsed Kerridge stone-slate roof and a stone chimney. The cottage has a square plan and is two stories high, with a single bay front beneath a cross-gabled roof. Although all openings are now blocked, the original windows were three-light, with rebated, chamfered stone mullions, of which only some remain. Some windows in the upper storey may have been altered to sashes. The south face has a chamfered stone doorcase. Inside, the first floor was the main room, showcasing a fine but deteriorating 17th-century plaster overmantel, which features an armorial shield surrounded by twisted foliage and pilasters. Similar buildings can be found in the garden to the east and on two hills to the south of Lyme Park, as depicted in a painting from around 1690.
