Description
The Lodge is a lodge built around 1830-1840, likely designed by Paxton and Robertson, in the Italianate style. It features coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and a plain tile hipped roof that has an overhang supported by brackets. The building has two ashlar lateral stacks and a plain band at the first floor level. It is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan.
The south elevation has three bays, with a projecting bay on the left that includes a ground floor bay window with a configuration of 1-3-1 round-arched lights. Above this, there is a three-light window also with round-arched lights. In the angle between the two wings, there is a flat-roofed ashlar porch that has moulded imposts and a cornice, with a chamfered angle. Inside the porch, there is a round-arched window and doorway, the latter featuring massive jambs and a lintel, along with a panelled door. To the right of the porch, there is a single light round-arched window, with a similar single light and a three-light window above.
The west elevation has a single light round-arched window on each floor, a projecting chimney breast, and paired round-arched windows. The east elevation mirrors the south with a bay window and a three-light window above.
The Lodge was built as part of the picturesque model village created by Paxton for the Sixth Duke of Devonshire.
