Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Harbottle, built in the 12th century and largely rebuilt between 1848 and 1849 by G. Pickering. It features squared stone and random rubble construction, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The church has a four-bay nave and a one-bay chancel.
The nave was originally the chancel of a much larger medieval church, with one east respond of the former south arcade still attached to the southeast corner on the outside. The west end includes a doorway with a shouldered lintel and a round-headed window above it, along with a gabled bellcote. The north and south sides have plain round-headed windows, all of which date from the 1848-9 rebuilding. The south wall masonry and the lower part of the north wall are remnants of the medieval structure.
The chancel, also constructed in 1848-9, incorporates two medieval grave covers with foliated crosses built into the south wall. The east end of the chancel features three stepped round-headed windows and is topped with a gabled roof adorned with wheel-head cross finials.
