Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church with a Grade II* designation. The tower dates from the 11th and 13th centuries, while the arcades are from the 13th and 14th centuries. The aisles were rebuilt in 1879, and the chancel was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The church is constructed of dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof and consists of a west tower, nave, south porch, chancel, and vestry. The west tower is broad and square, unbuttressed, featuring a small 12th-century window in the lower stage and paired lancets in the bell stage, topped with a plain parapet. The nave has four bays with lancet windows, and the chancel has two bays, with the east end showcasing three stepped lancets with shafts and shaft rings.

Inside, there is an 11th-century unmoulded tower arch resting on plain imposts. The north and south arcades consist of three bays supported by octagonal piers with moulded bases and capitals, featuring double-chamfered arches. The arches on the south side are adorned with fleurs de lys at the point of springing. The plain west responds appear to be 11th-century but have semi-octagonal bases, suggesting possible later rebuilding. East of the arcades, there are stretches of solid wall with concave cornices on three sides, followed by another bay with similar octagonal responds and arches, whose capitals are of 14th-century style. The chancel arch is also from the 14th century. A lower half of a 14th-century monument to a priest is built into the north wall of the chancel. The octagonal font features heraldic panels, leaf forms, geometric patterns, and is dated March 11th, 1662.
