Description

The Royal Oak is a mid-18th century inn with earlier origins and 19th-century alterations, located on the south side of Gillamoor Village Street. It is constructed from squared sandstone with tooled sandstone quoins, resting on rubble footings, and features a pantile roof with brick stacks. The building is two stories high with a four-window front. A plank door is positioned to the center right, and the windows are three-light, large-pane horizontal sliding sashes with painted stone sills and pointed flat arches. There is a stepped eaves course, with stacks at the end right and center left and right.

Inside, the left room of the entrance passage has massive spine beams and square section joists. There is a 19th-century fireplace with a plain surround on the left end, along with a corner cupboard that has reeded edges and a door made of one shaped raised and fielded panel. The end right wall features a segment-arched fireplace with a monolithic lintel on plain jambs, coved imposts, and a cornice shelf. A Bible cupboard door on strap hinges is located in the front wall, and at the rear, there is a plank staircase door on H-L hinges. In the room to the right of the passage, there is a 19th-century fireplace with a surround that includes a dentilled cornice shelf.
