Description
The Church of St Aidan is a church built in 1802 by James Smith and restored in 1880. It features squared limestone on a herringbone-tooled plinth, with the north side rendered. The church has finely tooled quoins and dressings, and a stone flag roof. A timber bellcote with a lead and slate roof and lead spire is located at the west end. The structure includes a continuous nave and chancel, along with a south porch.
At the west end, there is a round-arched window with paired lights that have cusped, round heads. The square-section bellcote has paired round-headed louvred openings on each face, topped with a broach spire and a fish weather-vane. The south gabled porch features a round-arched opening and a carved group in high relief above it. East of the porch are two round-arched nave windows with paired lights and cusped pointed heads, and two similar square-headed windows in the chancel.
Between the nave windows, there are two wall tablets commemorating the builder of the church, James Smith, detailing his work on the chapel and his life. The north side and east end have no openings, and all window openings are quoined. The gables are coped, with a gable cross on the chancel.
Inside, the screen at the west end includes a balustrade from 1682, featuring turned undulating balusters beneath a rail that is partially carved with a stylised foliage frieze and part that records the date and the contemporary Church Wardens. A second balustrade of twisted balusters from around 1700 serves as the communion rail and the front rail of the pews. There is a tub font on a 19th-century cylindrical pedestal, and the roof is a double braced king-post design.
