Description

The Cottage West View, part of Faceby Manor, is an early 19th-century house that was enlarged and remodelled in 1895. It is now divided into two dwellings, with a cottage attached. The building is constructed of stone, now rendered, and has a Lakeland slate roof with stone chimneys. The original villa-like structure was lengthened to the rear, and the cottage is attached at the end, creating an irregular L-shaped plan.

The main south front is two storeys high and has three windows, notable for their large proportions. A central, pedimented Ionic porch, distyle in antis, is now partially glazed. Plain sash windows are set within raised surrounds, and a stone modillion eaves cornice runs along the roofline. A cill band marks the first floor. The roof is hipped, with two corniced chimneys.

The returns to the sides are slightly irregular, with projecting bays and similar sash windows, some within architraves. The attached cottage, located to the left rear, has a lower roofline but otherwise a similar appearance.

Inside, the interior features high-quality woodwork and hardware, including six-panel doors. An open-well staircase has turned balusters and a carved balustrade on the landing.
