Church. Probably C12 fabric with C15 insertions and C19 restoration. Hammer dressed sandstone and limestone rubble, Welsh and Westmorland slate roofs. 3-bay nave with south porch, 2-bay chancel. West front: 2-light trefoil-headed window with bellcote above. Nave: 2-light trefoil-headed windows throughout. C19 south porch contains C19 doorway in Norman style, probably a copy of the original, and incorporating the original shafts and bases. Blocked round-headed door of 2 square orders on worn scalloped capitals to north side. Chancel: 2-light trefoil-headed windows with blocked ogee-arched priests' door to south. 3-light Perpendicular window to east. Interior: nook shaft to west of south door may have been a feature of an original Norman tower arch. Many good memorials in chancel including one to Ralfe Tankard, died 1601 aged 75, with bust in oval medallion and incised shield in painted marble. Also Ann Tankard, died 1608, aged 2, also on incised and painted marble, with a clock face, a rose-bush, a lady and a baby in a cradle. Later monuments include Charles Tancred, died 1769, aged 70: white marble on grey background with medallion and arms above. Pevsner N. "Yorkshire: the North Riding" 1966.
