Description
Nesfield and Mulgrave Cottage are two houses built around 1896, designed by W.H. Brierley for Mr. M. McEacharn. The cottages are constructed from herringbone-tooled sandstone that was reused from the parish church built in 1821, which was replaced by the Church of St. Mary between 1894 and 1896. They feature tooled dressings and pantile roofs. Each cottage has a two-storey front with three windows. Mulgrave Cottage, located on the right, is slightly lower than Nesfield Cottage.
Nesfield Cottage has a board door with inserted glazing and original ironwork beneath a bracketed flat hood. To the left of the door is a small four-pane fixed light, followed by two 2-light, 16-pane casements. The window to the right of the door consists of three similar lights, with the center one being a casement. The first-floor windows are six-pane casements, with three lights on each side of a dropped, two-light staircase window above the door. All windows have chamfered sills and tooled lintels, with coped gables and raised kneelers. The end stacks include an external stack on the left side.
Mulgrave Cottage mirrors the design of Nesfield, featuring an unaltered door. Inside, both houses have closed-string, dogleg staircases with diagonally-set stick balusters and moulded, raking handrails, along with original board doors and door furniture. Nesfield Cottage retains a kitchen fireplace with a high bracketed moulded shelf, while Mulgrave Cottage has original fireplaces in all first-floor rooms, complete with moulded surrounds and stepped, moulded cornice mantelshelves.
