Description
St Cedd's Well is a public fountain located in the center of Lastingham village. It was built in the 19th century using stone from the 12th century Rosedale Abbey. The fountain is made of dressed sandstone and has a square plan. It features a pointed cusped canopy that has been reused to create a flat lintel supported by colonettes with voluted cushion capitals. There is a flat cornice and a stepped cap that ends in a moulded pedestal carrying an iron cross. The lintel is inscribed with the words "St Cedd's Well." Inside, there is a lion's head pump with a later tap positioned above it. A wooden panel displays a weathered inscription on the left side, which reads: "CEDD ABBIE LASTINGAE FUNDATOR AD 654 OBIIT AD 664 ET SEPULTUS EST IN ECCLASIA A DEXTRA ALTARIS."
