Description

Victoria Cross is a commemorative cross located on Lidsty Hill in Spaunton. The base was constructed in 1837, and the cross itself was added in 1897. Made of gritstone, the hexagonal base is raised on two low hexagonal steps. The cross stands approximately 2.14 meters high. The base features inscriptions: "VR 1837" on the north side and "Victoria RI 1897" on the south side. This late 19th-century cross commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria and replaced a medieval High Cross, which was likely a sanctuary cross from the Church of St Mary in Lastingham.
