SPAUNTON LIDSTY HILL (west side, off) Victoria Cross

Commemorative cross. Base of 1837 and cross of 1897. Gritstone. Hexagonal base raised on 2 low hexagonal steps. Cross approximately 2.14 metres high. Base inscribed to north: VR 1837; to south: Victoria RI 1897. The late C19 cross commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria replaced a medieval High Cross. Original cross was probably a sanctuary cross of the Church of St Mary, Lastingham (qv).
