Description
The Horse Shoe Hotel is a hotel located in Egton Bridge, built in the early 19th century, with later alterations and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a pantile roof with stone dressings. It has an L-shaped plan, two storeys and attics, and four windows, along with a one-storey lean-to at the left end.
The main entrance is a right-of-centre six-panel door set beneath a shaped herringbone-tooled lintel. To the left of the door is a blocked fire window, while to the right is a three-window corniced, canted bay that contains 12- and 16-pane sash windows. The remaining windows are tripartite, featuring centre sashes with small panes and herringbone-tooled lintels. All windows have stone sills. There is also a six-panel door beneath a shaped lintel in the lean-to.
The hotel has coped gable ends and shaped kneelers with ball and pedestal finials. Two flat dormers with six-pane casements have been inserted into the roof. The building has end and centre corniced stacks. On the right gable end, there is a relief-carved 'F' within a keyed circular surround. The right return features an extension wing that is two storeys high with two windows, which include 12-pane sashes with stone sills on both floors. The ground floor windows have tooled lintels, while the first floor windows have herringbone-tooled lintels. The right gable of the extension is coped, with a shaped kneeler, ball and pedestal finial, and a corniced stack.
