Description
The Pinfold, located to the south of Maynard Bridge in Swainby, is a structure from the 18th century or earlier. It is built from roughly-coursed large sandstone blocks and features heavy, tooled-and-margined half-round coping along the top. There is a wrought iron gate, and the square enclosure has walls that step down from north to south. A 20th-century gate is present, and the center of the pinfold is now planted with roses. A plaque on the north wall commemorates the conversion of this ancient pinfold by voluntary labor in 1972-1973. Originally the property of the Lords of the Manor, it was transferred, along with manorial rights, to the parish of Whorlton by Miss Winifred Walker of Kirkby-in-Cleveland in 1967. The pinfold is included for its historical interest.
