Description
Hill House School is a late 18th-century villa that has been altered and extended in the early and late 20th centuries. The building is constructed of roughcast brick with a plain tile roof and brick stacks. Originally a two-story, three-bay front pile, it is joined by a slightly lower, ridged rear pile. A matching two-bay wing has been added to the rear pile, overlooking the garden, forming an L-shape. Further single-story additions and a late 20th-century service infill are present.
The original south-facing entrance front is two stories and has an attic, with three bays. The central bay features a full-height semicircular bow, accessed by a stone step. The entrance is a top-lit door with eight octagonal panels, set under a three-centred head. Small sash windows with similar heads flank the entrance. Three more sash windows are on the first floor, with the middle window being larger. Rendered plinths and large lozenge-pane sashes, also with three-centred heads, are present on either side. A raised band marks the first floor. A two-light casement replaces a sash window on the right-hand side. The roof has two 20th-century hipped dormers with Diocletian windows and tile hanging. There is a hipped roof over the canted end bays and a half-conical roof to the central projection.
