Description
Gilpins is a rectory that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the 18th century and has been altered in the early and late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and has a plain tile roof. It is two stories high with an attic and was originally designed with three bays on each side. One end now features full-height bays and a wing at the rear, while the other end has a wing.
The entrance front has a central six-panel door set within a pedimented doorcase. Above the door is a four-pane sash window in a lugged frame. The other bays contain four-pane sash windows set under rubbed arches, and there are two-light hip-roofed dormers located between the bays. A stack is positioned on the return ridge of the roof.
To the left, there is a set-back 19th-century two-story, two-bay wing with a hip roof. The right end has two 19th-century two-story canted bays featuring French windows and four-pane sash windows under rubbed arches, with shutters on the first floor. Similar dormers are present on the hipped roof, which has a stack at the end of the ridge. At the far end, there is a two-story wing with a canted bay window and a shuttered sash window above it. This building was the residence of Reverend William Gilpin from 1777 to 1788.
