Description

Southlands School is a small country house built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and has a plain tile roof. It is two stories high with an attic and features a double pile design with seven bays, including projecting wings at both ends. There is a low two-story, two-span service wing at one end.

The entrance front has a central bay with a pediment and a porch supported by four slender Doric columns, topped with a flat roof. Below this, there is a large six-panel door flanked by sash windows. To the left, there is a sash window set in an arched recessed panel, while to the right, there is a high-set cambered-head window. Outside this half bay, there is a thin sash window. Each side of the central bay has a raised band, and at each end, there are full-height, one-and-a-half bay wide wings that are half-octagonal in shape. Each wing features sash windows set in arched recesses and pilasters at the corners. The first floor also has a raised band, and above each opening, there are square sash windows. The building is topped with a heavy moulded cornice, and the main roof and wing roofs are hipped. On either side of the central bay, there are hipped dormers with sash windows. Large chimney stacks are located behind the ridge. The service wing is situated on the right end of the house. It is believed that the house was built by Reverend William Gilpin, who lived there from 1788.
