Description
The Burrard Neale Monument is a Grade II* listed obelisk located on Monument Lane in Boldre, built in 1840 by G. Draper with G. Banks as the builder. Made of white granite, it features bronze inscription tablets. The monument is designed in an Egyptianate style and stands on a four-step base. It has a slightly stepped plinth with a central tapering stone that displays a tablet on its face. Above this is an Egyptian cornice, leading to three steps that rise to a needle that reaches 20 meters in height. The monument was erected in memory of Admiral Sir Harry Burrard Neale of Walhampton, who was the Member of Parliament for Lymington. It aligns with the axis of Lymington High Street and marks the end of a vista from the Church of St Thomas at the top of the street. G. Draper of Chichester is also known for designing the Eyre Coote Monument in Rockbourne.
