Description

Rookin House and the attached barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the mid-18th century, with later additions. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a steeply pitched slate roof. The southeast elevation has two storeys and five bays, with the fifth bay being recessed and lower due to it being a later addition. The windows have plain stone surrounds and are sash windows with single glazing bars. The second bay includes an entrance with a Gibbs surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a pediment, leading to a studded door. There is a 20th-century re-entrant porch at the fifth bay. Gable-end stacks are present, and a single-storey bay on the left connects to the barn, which is now used for stabling and other purposes. The barn features two entrances, one with a timber lintel and a glazed timber infill set back behind the barn entrance opening, along with an inserted window. The rear elevation has a small gabled projection and varied window styles. Inside, there are chamfered beams, fielded panel doors, and cupboards flanking the fireplace, although the lower parts are missing. The fireplace has a deep cornice and a gun rack above it. The cupboard doors, which may have been relocated, feature fielded panels, with the upper ones shaped. The staircase includes turned balusters, square newels, and moulded handrails.
