Description

High Side Farmhouse and adjoining barn date from the 17th century, with 19th-century alterations. The farmhouse is inscribed above the entrance with the initials "R. & E.G." and the date 1668, referring to Robert and Elizabeth Gregg. The farmhouse has roughcast walls and a green slate roof, with brick chimney stacks. The barn is constructed of mixed rubble with flush quoins. The farmhouse and barn are under a common roof, spanning three bays.

The farmhouse entrance features a 20th-century plank door within a doorcase composed of engaged columns with carved diamond capitals, an inscribed lintel, and a cornice. Sash windows are set within painted stone surrounds, with drip moulds on those either side of the entrance. The barn has a plank door within an alternate-block surround beneath a Tudor lintel. A similar doorway sits to the extreme left, partially concealed by a shippon. Further later doorways are present, along with a loft doorway and small openings with chamfered surrounds.

Inside the farmhouse, a segmental stone-arched inglenook is notable, along with a panelled salt cupboard and a recess for a spice cupboard. Deeds for the property, dating from 1567 to 1717 (D/Ken/5/2), are held by the Cumbria County Record Office.
