Description
Langdale War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Langdale slate and is located in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Chapel Stile, prominently positioned near the path leading to the church entrance. The memorial features a plain wheel cross on a two-tiered base, which sits atop a wall. There are projecting three-course piers on either side of the wall, flanking a canted rectangular tablet that lists the 26 names of those who fell in the First World War. In front of the wall is a rectangular forecourt filled with stone chippings, enclosed by a low curb, which contains a secondary tablet recording the five names of those who fell in the Second World War. The main inscription states: "THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ THIS MEMORIAL BEARING THE NAMES OF LANGDALE MEN WHO FELL IN ACTION/ DIED OF WOUNDS OR OTHER CAUSES WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISIONERS AS A/ LASTING RECORD OF THEIR BRAVERY, PATRIOTISM AND DEVOTION TO THE EMPIRE," while the secondary inscription reads: "THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945."
