Description

Low Hollins is a farmhouse, now a private house, dating from 1687. It is located in Brackenthwaite, near Buttermere. The date and inscription "R. & C.S. 1687" (Robert & Catherine Stubbs) is visible above the entrance. The exterior is painted incised stucco and roughcast, with a graduated greenslate roof, projecting eaves supported by timber, and original painted roughcast chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high, with four bays and a lower, single-bay extension to the left. Twentieth-century casement windows are set into the original chamfered surrounds on the ground floor; a small fire window is on the left side. The upper floor has two- and three-light stone-mullioned windows with chamfered surrounds. A projecting wall on the right is likely the remains of a barn wall. The left end walls feature small original chamfered windows. The extension to the left has a twentieth-century plank door within a chamfered surround; the lintel above is inscribed and sits under a hoodmould. The rear of the building has a two-bay extension with a twentieth-century door and window, but also one original two-light stone-mullioned window and an eighteenth-century chamfered-surround casement window with glazing bars. The interior includes an inglenook with a heck partition and a carved plaster frieze depicting horses and doves. Historical records from the Cumbria County Record Office indicate that Robert Stubbs was admitted as a tenant on September 28, 1663, at a customary rent of 14 shillings and 2 pence.
