Description
The Windermere Hotel, built in 1834, was originally a coaching inn that provided stabling for horses crossing Kirkstone Pass. It is situated in a prominent hill-top position and reflects typical local style and materials, now characterized by 19th-century features. The building has slate walling and a moulded eaves cornice supported by wooden brackets, rising to three storeys. The central section features five 12-paned sash windows, with an ornate iron verandah above the ground floor supported by barley-sugar columns and Composite capitals, along with a fretted cornice and decorated spandrels, and an ornamented railing. The entrance is highlighted by a square iron porch with a gable pediment and pointed arches. To the south, there is a wing with three windows, where the center projects slightly and includes an open pediment and quoins. A four-storeyed square tower to the north has quoins and two-light windows. Modern additions to the north are excluded from this description.
