Description
Calgarth Hall, dating from the early 16th century, was the seat of the Philipson family from the early 15th century until 1717. The building is constructed of lime-washed stone rubble and features old slate roofs, spanning two storeys. The east front is long and low, with a central section that includes a boarded door, two windows on the ground floor, and three above—one small-paned sliding sash and two 16-paned sashes. To the left (south) is a wing that once housed barns, featuring remains of a corbelled projecting chimney. The north side has a higher gabled wing and a lower gabled wing at its east end, which includes a small lean-to porch with a medieval pointed arched doorway and a studded door. Adjacent to the barn wing on the south end is a range of stables. The north end of the larger wing contains a kitchen with a large projecting chimney that has offsets and an oven at its base. The west front displays stone mullioned and transomed windows with chamfers and labels in the north wing, while the rest features 16-paned sashes. The interior is noted for its important plaster ornamentation from the 16th and 17th centuries.
