Description

This is a farm outbuilding dated 1853, located east-south-east of High Birks Farmhouse. It has minor 20th-century alterations and features rubble water-shot Lakeland-stone walling, with limestone quoining and dressings, topped by a Westmorland slate roof laid to diminishing courses. The building is a bank barn type, designed in a linear form with substantial rear outshots flanking the upper side entry. It is two stories high with overlofts to the outshots and consists of five bays, with central access on the north side leading to the threshing and winnowing floor and fodder storage.

The south elevation has a shallow ground floor canopy that extends the full length of the building, supported by long stone canopy corbels, most of which are now failing. There are four single doorways and a cart entry, along with a small square window at the west end. Only the east end doorway and the window remain undisturbed; the other openings have been modified to create additional windows. A central first-floor winnowing doorway is located beneath a deep lintel, with an inscribed date stone above that reads 'J.C. 1853'. A tier of slit breathers is positioned below the projecting eaves, which are supported on moulded stone corbels.

The east and west side elevations have been altered, but they still feature stable doorways and windows beneath single massive lintels, with loft doors above. The rear outshots are accessed through side doors beneath a canopy that shelters the double doorway leading to the winnowing floor. This building is one of the largest surviving 19th-century bank barns in the Lake District.
