Description
Isel Hall is a tower house and hall wing located in Blindcrake, dating from the late 14th or early 15th century, with a late 15th-century hall and a 16th-century extension that underwent alterations in the 19th century. The tower features extremely thick walls made of calciferous sandstone rubble, with flush quoins and a battlemented parapet, topped by a gabled greenslate roof. The hall and wing are constructed from a mix of calciferous and red sandstone, covered by a graduated greenslate roof and featuring 19th-century yellow brick chimney stacks.
The rectangular tower includes a vaulted basement and three upper storeys. The hall connects to the north angle of the tower at almost right angles, comprising two storeys and five bays, along with a three-storey, six-bay extension under a common roof. The tower has some original loop windows, but mostly features irregular 2-light 16th-century windows with hoodmoulds. The hall and extension showcase 2- and 3-light Tudor windows and doorways, with the parapet adorned with shaped finials. The rear of the building has irregular Tudor doorways and windows, and the hall's rear wall is supported by two buttresses.
Inside the tower, there is a newel and straight staircase built into the thickness of the walls, as well as a garderobe chamber. The interior of the hall is notable for its Tudor panelling, which still shows traces of contemporary painting.
