Description

Hewthwaite Hall is a 17th-century farmhouse, dated and inscribed 1581 above the entrance. It features whitewashed rubble walls with flush quoins and has been raised in height under a 20th-century graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and 20th-century brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with a rear extension that creates an overall L-shape.

The entrance has a 20th-century door set in a painted chamfered stone surround, topped by a carved panel displaying the Royal coat-of-arms and the reversed Cumberland arms. Above this, there is another inscribed panel that reads "JOHN SWYNBUN ESQUIRE AND ELISEBETH HIS WYFE DID MAK COSTE OF THIS WORK IN THE DAIS OF THER LYF AND DOM (date) AND REG 23", with both panels flanked by carved figures highlighted in colour.

The ground floor features three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned windows with round-headed lights, which are set under hoodmoulds with plain shield stops. The upper floor has cross-mullioned windows, and there is a rear cross-mullioned stair window with cusped heads. The extension includes sash windows in stone surrounds.

Inside, the hall has beamed ceilings, and the 17th-century staircase is notable for its heavy turned balusters and broad handrail. Some of the bedroom doors are made of panelled oak from the 17th century.
