Description
High Brownrigg and the adjoining former byres are a farmhouse and former agricultural buildings dated 1722, with an inscription and coat-of-arms of Robert Vaux above the entrance. There is a late 18th-century extension, while the byres date from the mid-17th century and may have originally been part of the house. The building features roughcast walls with an eaves cornice and V-jointed quoins, topped by a graduated greenslate roof with sandstone slate bottom courses and coped gables, along with stone chimney stacks.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a single-bay extension to the right under a common roof. There is a plank door to the left and a 20th-century door to the right, both framed by painted stone architraves and set on millstone doorsteps sourced from Lord's Mill in Caldbeck. The windows are casements with glazing bars, each featuring a single opening pane, all within painted stone architraves. The extension has large sash windows in painted stone surrounds.
To the left, the lower byres are constructed of mixed limestone rubble and have three Tudor-arched doorways. There is an additional doorway on the extreme right that may have been a cross-passage, with a loft above. There are also two blocked and partly blocked lofts, along with a small opening with a chamfered surround. An adjoining single-storey garage is noted as not being of interest.
