Description
Brotherilkeld Farmhouse is a 17th-century building with later additions and alterations. The adjoining stable and barn were likely added in the 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins and is whitewashed. It features graduated slate roofs, with the barn having a lower roof, and stone ridges. A rendered chimney is located at the south end of the house. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing and is two storeys high. It has a three-bay façade: the central gabled porch contains a door, with a fixed window to the left and two small casements to the right, which may have replaced a door. Above, there are two sash windows, all set under timber lintels.
To the left of the farmhouse is a single-bay stable with a plank door and a vent slit above. The barn, also adjoining to the left, features a tall central wagon door leading to the threshing floor, with a winnowing door at the rear and segment-headed byre doors on either side. There are vent slits between and above the doors, all of which are made of planks. Inside the farmhouse, the interior is heavily beamed, with plank and muntin partitions and plank doors, along with a wall cupboard.
