Description
Eskdale Corn Mill is a corn mill that was mentioned in a survey by the Percy family in 1578. It was extended and had a second waterwheel added for Edward Hartley, the miller, between 1737 and 1772. The mill was restored in 1975 for Cumbria County Council. It is constructed of snecked rubble with quoins and features graduated slate roofs with stone ridges. The building has a T-shaped plan on a sloping site, consisting of two low storeys that include a peat store with a drying floor above, mill machinery, and an adjoining store wing that now serves as an exhibition area. A single-storey lean-to bakehouse is attached to the south end.
On the west elevation, the higher north block has plank doors on each floor and asymmetrical casement windows. The wing features a cart entrance on the north side and a plank door with two windows on the south side. The south block has a plank door to the lower floor under a slate canopy and a plank door with a casement window leading to the bakehouse. The east elevation showcases two 12-foot overshot waterwheels on the south block, both iron-framed, with one in working order and equipped with wooden floats.
Inside, there is a perforated metal drying floor heated by a peat kiln below, along with intact wooden machinery on both floors, including two grindstones. The bakehouse contains a beehive oven and a copper. The mill is now open to the public.
