Description
The Church of St Catherine is a parish church dating from the 14th century, with later additions and alterations, and was restored in 1881. It is constructed of random rubble and features a graduated slate roof with a stone ridge. The church has a gabled bellcote at the west end and an apex cross at the east. It is a single-storey building with four bays. The gabled south porch includes a plank inner door with a pointed head. Most of the windows are 19th-century stone-mullioned replacements, while the original east window, which is cusped and has three lights, was once pointed.
Inside, the font at the west end has an octagonal bowl from the 14th century, although Pevsner suggests it may be from the mid-17th century, resting on a later stem. Each face of the bowl features a panel with low-relief carving reminiscent of window tracery. A board on the south wall, dated 1798, lists the church's benefactors. The remaining fittings are from the 19th and 20th centuries, including stained glass by A. Sewell & Co. and Gibbs & Co., both based in London.
