Description
Lorna Cottage and the adjoining cottage to the west are two cottages that were originally a single cottage enlarged into a farmhouse. They date from the 16th to 17th century and were enlarged and reroofed in the late 19th century. The exterior is roughcast over rubble and possibly cob, with a half-hipped double Roman tiled roof. There is a large lateral stack with a slate-roofed bread oven projection to the right of the entrance, and an external stone stack on the left gable end topped with a brick cap. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of two cells and a cross passage, with one bay added to the right and two bays extended at the rear.
The cottages are one and a half storeys high and have a 2:2 bay arrangement. The wall of the end bay on the right is recessed, featuring a two-light casement window set below the eaves. The other windows on the left are set halfway into the roof space, with a three-light leaded iron casement on the ground floor to the left, a plank door beside the stack, and an iron-framed inglenook light. To the right, there is a three-light iron casement without leading and a two-light window beyond.
Access to Lorna Cottage is through a left return entry beside the gable end, with an extension of two bays set back into the hillside. The interior is partially visible, featuring a stair turret that opens out of the hall heated by the lateral stack. The beam stops are not visible, but there may be jointed cruck trusses in the original dwelling. It is said that the cottage was once an inn called "Live and Let Live."
