Cottage Approximately 1 Metre East Of Court Place Farmhouse

This cottage, located approximately 1 metre east of Court Place Farmhouse in Parracombe, is probably from the late 17th century and has seen alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of stone rubble and faced with corrugated iron, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof featuring gable ends. A tall stone rubble stack with a tapering cap is situated at the right gable end, while a rear lateral stone rubble stack heats the left-hand room, which is enclosed by a rear dairy outshut.

The cottage has a two-room and cross-passage layout, with a wide passage that includes a straight-run staircase on the right side. The left side is partitioned to create a narrow unheated central room that has a rear doorway leading to the dairy outshut, likely added in the late 18th century. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range with early 20th-century fenestration. All windows are two-light casements, with four panes per light on the upper storey and six panes per light on the ground floor, flanking a wide 20th-century lean-to porch.

Inside, the right-hand room features a chamfered axial ceiling beam, and a 19th-century fireplace lintel conceals the original one. There is a roughly chamfered door surround to the rear passage doorway, and the dairy outshut has a lime ash floor. The left-hand room has been altered in the 20th century, but the original fireplace likely still exists. The joinery and staircase upstairs have remained unaltered since the 19th century.
