Description
The remains of a churchyard cross, dating from the early 15th century, are located about 18 meters south of the nave of the Church of All Saints in Wootton Courtenay village. The cross features a mid-19th century calvary made of Ham stone. It consists of a three-stage calvary with an unusually fine octagonal socket, supported by four engaged columns that have moulded caps and plinths. The cross has recessed panels with moulded surrounds and a tapering shaft that displays deep grooves at the angles, standing approximately 1.8 meters high. An 1839 drawing by Buckler shows shields in the recessed panels, which are no longer visible today. Pooley notes that there were remains of sculpture on two sides of the shaft, but these are also no longer extant.
