Description

Highpark is a cottage, enlarged to form two dwellings and later converted back into one. The original core dates to the late 17th century, with an expansion occurring in the 18th century, and further alterations made in the late 20th century. The walls are rendered over a rubble and cob base, and the roof is thatched, hipped on the right side. A substantial external stone stack is located on the left gable end.

The original layout likely consisted of a single cell with a two-bay linhay attached. It was later enlarged by one bay with an outshut, creating two dwellings, which have now been combined into one. The cottage is one and a half storeys high, with three bays featuring 2- and 3-light casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are three 2-light dormers set below the eaves, and the ground floor has three windows to the left of a studded plank door, and one window to the right.

Inside, there is a blocked lateral stack to the rear, to the right of the cross passage, as well as a large circular pier to the left. Original features include a wattle and daub partition, a left gable fireplace with a bread oven, and a principal rafter roof consisting of three pairs of trusses, with a pair in the earlier section having cross apices supporting the ridge. Plastered reed ceilings are also present. It is speculated that the cottage may have originated as a two-cell dwelling, with the rear wall of one unit demolished and a circular pier inserted to create a linhay.
