Description

Stone is a Grade II* listed house, built in the mid to late 18th century. The exterior features roughcast over rubble with an ashlar faced central canted bay, ashlar quoins, and a string course. The hipped slate roof has a modillion cornice and rendered stacks flanking the pyramid roof of the central bay. The plan consists of two cells with an axial hall and a service wing at the rear. The house has two storeys and an attic in the central canted bay, with a layout of 1:1:1 bays. The attic includes lunettes, and there are Venetian windows flanking an arched head casement in the center. The first floor returns of the canted bay have blocked windows, while the ground floor features sash windows flanking a moulded surround with a key stone and imposts leading to a fanlight and 8-panel double doors. A date of 1678 is reset on the rear elevation, originally from another building. The interior has only been partially seen; the stairs were rebuilt in the 20th century, but there is a good carved 18th-century chimney piece on the right. The house is shown as a country house on the Day and Musters map of Somerset from 1782 and was owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, the last Warden of Exmoor Forest, until his Crown Lease expired in 1814.
