Description

A late 17th-century farmhouse, with 19th-century alterations and 20th-century additions, is located on South Dean Lane, Trentishoe. The farmhouse is constructed of painted stone rubble, with a slate roof over the main range, an asbestos slate roof at the right end, and a pantiled roof at the left end. A tall lateral stone rubble stack sits at the rear of the hall, and another stone rubble stack with tapered caps and drips is located at the right end of the main range. Originally a three-room and through-passage plan, the front through-passage doorway was blocked in the 19th century and replaced with a window, creating direct access to the hall. A former dairy is situated at the lower end to the left of the passage. The hall is heated by a rear lateral stack, with a narrow heated room beyond which has a projecting stair turret to the rear. In the 20th century, a former barn at the upper end (right) and an outbuilding at the left end, with a slightly lower roof, were incorporated into the dwelling. A 19th-century outshut with a slate roof extends to the rear of the lower end. The main range has a five-window facade, with principally 19th and early 20th-century sash windows. The left end has two 2-light casements (4 panes per light), a 2-pane window, a 2-light casement (6 panes per light), and another 2-light casement (4 panes per light). A 20th-century door has been inserted into the dairy to the left of a small 19th-century 3-light window within the blocked through-passage doorway. A projecting stone rubble porch with a half-glazed plank door and hall window projection with a 2-light casement (6 panes per light) are situated to the right. A converted outbuilding on the left end features a 3-light window over a blocked doorway with an inserted 20th-century window. A converted barn is characterized by a large dormer over a 4-light casement. The interior features a single chamfered axial ceiling beam with straight cut stops in the inner room. The original straight-run stone steps with slate treads lead to the rear stair projection. The hall contains two unchamfered axial ceiling beams and a 19th-century lintel over a fireplace incorporating a bread oven with a cast-iron door. A solid stone rubble wall rises only to first-floor level between the hall and inner room. Original flagstone floors are present in the hall and through-passage, while the inner room has a lime-ash floor. The 17th-century roof structure remains intact beneath the superimposed slate roof, comprising three trusses with straight principals, two tiers of trenched purlins, a diagonally set ridge purlin, and dove-tailed collars.
