Description
Withycombe Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that was enlarged in the mid-20th century. It features a flat bedded slate roof with a pyramid roof hipped over an extension on the left side, and circular stone stacks on both the left and right at the original gable end. The layout suggests it may have originally been a single cell with a partition at the lower end for cattle, later expanded at both ends to create a three-cell structure.
The cottage is two storeys high with a facade of three windows, all of which are from the 20th century. The wall is set back, with a central window and another to the right of a butt joint. The ground floor has a lit end bay on the left, a 20th-century door, and a window to the right. The wall is slightly curved to accommodate a gable end stair, which is lit by an arched head lancet with rubble voussoirs, along with a window to the right and another entrance in a lean-to addition.
On the rear elevation, there are polychrome slate voussoirs above a blocked door on the left gable end and two windows on each floor to the right. Inside, the cottage features a fireplace with a lintel and beam that are chamfered with scroll stops, and part of a well-crafted plank and muntin partition on a rubble plinth with scratch moulding on the stiles. There is a bench with an interesting carved end, also featuring scratch moulding on the inner side, which is damaged at the top, indicating it may have previously supported two beams to keep large animals out. This side of the screen has been restored with oak floorboards. A similar bench end can be found in West Nethercote.
