Description

The Packhorse Bridge over the River Exe is a medieval structure that was restored in 1952. It features a flat bedded slate surface with saddleback coping made of slate laid end on end. The bridge has a two-arch span with semicircular arches, constructed using random rubble voussoirs. There is a brief cutwater on the upstream side, while there is none on the downstream side. The parapet ramps up to the center, with a pebble path running between. This bridge is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument, designated as Somerset County No 38.
