Description

Lynnfield is a cottage, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with 19th and 20th century additions to the southwest end. It has solid, roughcast walls and a thatched roof, which is hipped at the northeast end. There are rendered chimney stacks in the gable walls of the original cottage and the 19th century extension. The cottage originally comprised two rooms, with a central staircase leading up from the front door. It now has a three-window front facing the garden; the original cottage section has a symmetrical two-window front with a plank front door in the centre and a thatched wooden porch. The windows in the original cottage are 3-light wooden casements with two panes per light. The windows in the 19th century addition are taller, 2-light wooden casements with the second-story window retaining its original four panes. The rear wall, facing the road, has no windows. The northeast gable wall has a 2-light casement window with two panes per light in each storey. The southwest gable wall has a second-story window on either side of the chimney stack; these are also 2-light wooden casements with four panes per light and a 4-pane transom light above. Inside, the left-hand ground floor room contains a large fireplace with granite jambs and a plain wood lintel. The upper floor has a plain unchamfered beam. The roof features trusses with plain principal rafters, notched at the apex, with collars fixed to the face of the principals using two wooden pegs and an old iron nail at each end. There are no common rafters, just broad split thatching spars. Cottages of this date are relatively uncommon in Devon.
