Description
The lychgate and perimeter wall of the churchyard of the Church of St John is a late 19th-century structure. A watercolour from 1850 depicts a simple wooden lychgate in this location. The lychgate is made of granite ashlar and features a slated roof. It consists of two granite side walls with moulded corbels at the top on both the front and back. Between these walls are two granite gateposts, from which a pair of open-framed wooden gates hang. These gates are fitted with cast-iron uprights that have decorative tops and cusped wooden braces shaped like inverted V's. In front of the lychgate, there is a flight of four curved steps made of granite setts with granite kerbs, which was erected in 1887, as indicated by a plaque. The perimeter wall is constructed of granite rubble and has shaped granite coping on the south and part of the west sides. The source of the historical reference is the watercolour dated 1850 in Lustleigh parish church.
