Description
The Lustleigh War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by Colonel A. S. Dunlop of the Lustleigh branch of The British Legion, now known as The Royal British Legion. It was altered after the Second World War and is constructed of granite.
The memorial takes the form of a granite boulder surrounded by curved walls and plaques. It features a four-stepped base with a curved plinth supporting the granite boulder, which has an incised cross. The plinth is inscribed with the years 1914-1919 and 1939-1945, along with the phrase "LEST WE FORGET." The stone walls that encircle the boulder are made of random rubble with ashlar quoins and saddled-backed coping. At the rear of the memorial, there is an attachment for a flagpole.
On either side of the boulder, there are two plaques. The two earlier plaques, located furthest from the boulder, are inscribed with "DEATH DUE TO SERVICE/ OVERSEAS./ (NAMES)." The two later plaques, positioned closer to the boulder, both read: "1939-1945/ (NAMES)."
