Description

This is a barn attached to the east of Sampford Manor, built in the early to mid-19th century with later 19th-century alterations. It is constructed from granite rubble with square quoins and has a slate roof. The barn features six bays and has a lower ground level central front entry as well as a central upper rear entry. To the rear right, there are remains of a later 19th-century horse engine shed and a launder along the back.

The ground floor includes a cart entry with a stone segmental head and keystone on the left, a smaller stable door on the right with a brick segmental head, and a two-light window opening to the right also with a brick segmental head. There are ventilation slits to the right and left of the cart entry and three slits under the eaves. A loading door on the left has a pitched hood. The left and right returns of the barn have blank gable ends.

At the rear, there is an opposing cart entry and the remains of the former horse engine shed to the right, along with a circle of granite monoliths and an infilled window opening in the rear wall of the barn. A similar stable door is located on the left, which is lower and has been rebuilt with a concrete lintel, along with the remains of a launder from a former waterwheel. Inside, there are gear wheels remaining on the rear wall from the horse engine machinery, and the late 19th-century roof consists of six bays with scissors trusses and two rows of purlins.
