Description
This building is a barn and byres located approximately 1 meter south-west of West Chapple Farmhouse. It likely dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with later enlargements and rearrangements in the late 17th to early 18th century. The structure is made of large granite rubble with massive roughly-dressed quoins and boulder footings, and it has been patched with granite stone rubble. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, which replaced the original thatch.
The barn and byres are arranged in a long range down the hillslope, facing the farmhouse to the north-east. The central barn features a large full-height doorway, with a window at the rear. Each end of the barn has a byre, with the left downhill byre containing a hayloft above. Both byres have doorways, each with a slit window towards the end. The left byre also has a hayloft loading hatch over its doorway, and the end wall includes slit windows at both levels. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the barn has plain carpentry details and a continuous roof supported by late 17th to early 18th century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. This barn and byres are part of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet of Chapple.
