Description
Chudleigh Lodge, along with the stone walls and gate piers to the east, is a lodge dating from around 1828, likely designed by C.R. Ayers, the architect of Canonteign House. The building is stuccoed and features a hipped slate roof with a central stack that has a squat, diagonally-set shaft. It is rectangular in plan, comprising four rooms arranged around a central stack. The lodge is a single storey with deep eaves supported by eaves brackets. The front is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a central doorway with a Tudor arch, a plank door with a cover strip and studs, and arched two-light casements with timber glazing bars on either side. The interior has not been inspected. To the east, short sections of stone rubble walling end at rusticated granite ashlar gate piers, which are square in plan and topped with granite ball finials. This lodge has group value with Canonteign House and is one of two well-preserved lodges associated with it.
