Description

Spara Bridge is a road bridge over the River Teign, built in 1660, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed of granite rubble and features two spans with segmental arches and a small flood span. Tall cutwaters between the larger spans rise to create refuges, and the bridge has parapets with granite coping. An inscription panel set into the upstream parapet, though somewhat decayed, reads, "This bridge was builded at the countyes charges Anno 1660." Historical references by Jervoise and Henderson mention that a bridge called "Sparrowe Bridge" was in decay in 1647, suggesting that the current structure is a replacement.
