Description

Ashton Mill is a mill that incorporates a former cottage and is currently used as a store. It dates from the 18th century or earlier, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of granite and freestone rubble and cob, with weatherboarding in the gable ends and a gabled corrugated iron roof. It features a projecting end stack with set-offs and a truncated brick shaft.

The mill has a rectangular plan, with the mill located to the west and a disused 20th-century undershot waterwheel, which still has its leat intact. The exterior is two storeys high with an attic. The west elevation showcases an iron undershot wheel with timber arms and iron floats, made by Steiner and Tunn Ltd, Tiverton. There is a section of well-dressed coursed granite masonry next to the wheel. The ground floor has two 2-light windows, with the left window featuring 19th-century brick dressings and lapped glass. The first floor has four small 1-light windows, all with 19th-century brick dressings and lapped glass, along with one small square window to the left and a 1-light window in the gable. The left return side has a centrally located doorway, a 1-light ground floor window, and a 2-light first floor 19th-century timber casement window with glazing bars. The rear elevation retains the stack of the former cottage, with doorways flanking it, a window and a first floor doorway to the left, and another first floor doorway to the right. The sluice gate is attached to grooved granite posts.

The interior has not been inspected, but the current owners possess a complete list of owners and occupiers of the mill from 1780 to the present day. The mill forms a good group with the miller's cottage, which is visible from Chudleigh Road across the River Teign.
